Export
of eco-technologies: new markets

More and more countries are considering the possibility of introducing environmentally friendly technologies and increasing the imports of related goods. The experts from the MOSPROM Center for Export Support and Development analyzed the most promising directions of echo-tech products export for Moscow enterprises.
Among eco-tech electric power products, solar cells and storage batteries are most in demand: global imports of each of these groups are approaching 60 bn USD in 2020. Other eco-tech products include fuel cell power supplies, power generators, power converters and controls for autonomous power systems, as well as LED lamps.

The global eco-tech products export is developing in three main directions: USA, Europe (Germany, France, Great Britain Spain, etc.) and East Asia (the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, etc.).
PROSPECTS FOR RUSSIA AND MOSCOW
Russian exports in the field of environmental technologies were growing steadily from 2017 to 2019 (+ 33.1%), and decreased only in 2020. On average, 27% of Russian exports of environmental technologies go to the Moscow enterprises. Moscow exports such products to 103 countries.

Today, East Asia is the most attractive for the export of eco-technologies. Why should Moscow companies especially consider this direction?
  • High demand for eco-technology products.
  • Strong Moscow exports growth in recent years.
  • Moscow companies' leadership in the export of some product types (batteries and solar cells).
INDIA
According to the International Energy Agency, we can expect an explosive growth in demand for energy resources in the next 20 years in India due to industrialization, as well as urban population and economy growth.

The vast majority (98.3%) of Moscow's environmental technology exports to India is made up of electric generators, the demand for which is very high. In 2020, our factories sold power generators worth USD 5.27 m to Indian companies.

It is curious that the share of environmental technologies supplied from Moscow to India is growing (by 18.84% over the past year), while all-Russian exports to this country are decreasing (by 45.4% over the past year).
TOP 5 COUNTRIES IN TERMS OF ECHO-TECHIMPORTS FROM MOSCOW IN 2020:
Belarus – 18.85m (+22.1% vs. 2019)

Kazakhstan – 13.48 m (+4.96% vs. 2019)

Algeria – 7.97 m (+169.04% vs. 2019)

China – 5.37 m (+1.3% vs. 2019)

India – 5.36 m (+135.4% vs. 2019)
MYANMAR
Moscow is the only constituent entity of the Russian Federation that exports electric generators to Myanmar (67.4% of Moscow exports in 2020). Supplies only started in 2019 and have grown 31 times in just a year! This means good prospects for Moscow companies, also proven by the overall growth of Moscow exports to Myanmar: in 2020 it increased by 64.8% against 2019, amounting to 0.997 m USD.
HONG KONG
There is another opportunity to gain a foothold in the East Asian market. In this area, Moscow holds the leadership among the constituent entities of the Russian Federation: Moscow products account for 92.69% of Russian exports. In 2020, we supplied fuel cell power and electric supply sources to Hong Kong businesses.

BANGLADESH
Last year, Moscow companies exported three types of eco-tech products to Bangladesh, including, in approximately equal proportion, solar cells (USD 0.15 m), storage batteries (USD 0.14 m) and power converters (USD 0.11 m. The Moscow companies account for more than 95% of exports, since the share of Moscow exports to Bangladesh amounted to 24.6% of the total Russian exports in 2020.
MALAYSIA
The main type of environmental technologies that Moscow companies are exporting to Malaysia are power converters and control devices for autonomous power systems. Over the past year, the volume of these exports has almost tripled! In general, Moscow exports to Malaysia have grown significantly in recent years: USD 0.01 m in 2017 vs. USD 0.18 m in 2019. In 2020, which was extraordinary in all respects, Moscow exports decreased by 22.6% against 2019.

Taiwan and the Republic of Korea, as well as Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore, where the share of Moscow exports in 2020 amounted to 78.2, 40 and 31.4% of Russian exports, respectively, are no less promising for Russian and Moscow eco-technology exports.
