Food Packaging Samsara

Food packaging manufacturer Lambumiz is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. In 1972, it began releasing milk "pyramids", which have now become a nostalgic symbol of the Soviet era. Since 1986, the plant, which was then called "Moslambumiz", switched to the production of the Gable Top packaging (with a cap on top). Today, this kind of packaging can be seen in grocery stores, it is used for milk, juices and even wine. As confirmed by experts, it is not only more convenient, but also environmentally friendly, if the correct manufacturing technology is applied.

WAFER CUP AS GOLD STANDARD

And there is nothing to laugh about. Indeed, from the environmental point of view, the best packaging is the one that will be eaten along with the main product, be it an ice cream in a wafer cup or an edible-cased sausage. The second place in terms of environmental friendliness is taken by multiway packaging, which is reusable and recyclable. A striking example of reusable packaging is provided by the Soviet milk bottles, which were handed over after use and returned to the production cycle. But this requires a well-functioning circulation of such containers. For recyclable packaging, the degree of possible conversion is the key: the higher it is, the better is the container from the environmental point. These seemingly simple axioms form the main environmental goals for packaging manufacturers.
Lambumiz products, on average, contain 88% of cardboard, which is perhaps the most environmentally friendly material today, which decomposes completely, and the production of which leaves the smallest carbon footprint, thus, if correctly collected, the cardboard can be reused.

DANGER OF A PLASTIC FORK

For business, solving any problem is always associated with the economy and rationality issues, and environmental problems are no exception. Meanwhile, the Lambumiz representatives are sure that packaging manufacturers need to get away from this dilemma, because highly recyclable containers must be reused to make subsequent production cheaper.

However, the issue of creating a closed loop to recycle and reuse the used paper or cardboard food packaging is not so easy to solve. There are a number of requirements for waste paper content and quality needed in raw materials, as well as serious restrictions on the further application of packaging those are used to manufacture.
The company suggests using the Data Matrix digital code as a tool for tracking the entire life cycle of packaging, from production and products packaging to the stage of disposal
THE COMPANY'S SUPPLIERS ARE CERTIFIED BY FSC (FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL) AND PEFC (PROGRAM FOR THE ENDORSEMENT OF FOREST CERTIFICATION), WHICH ENSURE THAT THE WOOD IS HANDLED CORRECTLY TO PRODUCE CARDBOARD AND THAT NEW TREES ARE PLANTED TO REPLACE FELLED ONES

GREEN TRANSFORMATION

It is a difficult and time-consuming task to arrange production that would meet environmental standards, especially for the enterprises with a history, the infrastructure of which requires reengineering and modernization. This means that they need to be produced with account of environmental criteria.

So, this year Lambumiz plans to replace part of the infrastructure communications at the enterprise
(for example, the climate and heating control system), as well as switch to energy-saving lighting, which will significantly increase the energy efficiency of production. Recycling is also being developed here. Now the company processes about a thousand tons of cardboard a month and soon expects to launch an entire production site for this purpose. Several commercial proposals for the supply of waste disposal and packaging recycling equipment have already been received.

In addition, Lambumiz is preparing to introduce and certify an environmental management system, as well as to obtain a certificate in accordance with international standard ISO 14024 for its products, providing them with the appropriate Life Leaf label.

Aleksandr Abalakov
CEO of Lambumiz CJSC:
"When only economic questions are put in the foreground, this has an extremely negative effect on the environment. This is how the large quantities of non-recyclable plastic began to be used to produce food packaging. Modern trends require sustainability and diversity. In response to those, in 2020 we launched the production of disposable tableware made from laminated cardboard. It contains 93% of cardboard and only 7% of plastic. Unfortunately, we cannot completely avoid plastic, because it increases the resistance of the base material to mechanical stress, as well as to moisture and temperature".
