Samsung Electronics sustainable environment

Samsung Electronics is an example of green business. The company develops environmental protection projects, improves the products and supply chains sustainability, and expands the range of social initiatives.
ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH
Since 1992, when the Environmental Protection Declaration was adopted, Samsung Electronics has been incorporating environmental projects into the core of its business practice. Then, in 1998, the company pioneered the creation of e-waste recycling and recycling centers in the industry.

In 2004, Samsung introduced the Eco-Design Process rating system to measure energy&resource efficiency and environmental impact of a product from the very start of development. A year later, the Samsung Environmental Analysis Laboratory was established, which introduced a system to control hazardous substance use at all production levels.

In 2009, Samsung introduced Green Memory, which is a fast and reliable semiconductor solution with low power consumption. According to calculations, switching all servers in the world to 5G Green Memory Solution by 2014 could save 45 TW of electricity per year, which is comparable to planting 800 million 10-year-old trees.

Since 2016, Samsung quantum dot TVs have been manufactured without the use of cadmium, which is harmful to humans and the environment.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION AND RECYCLING
Since the Kyoto Protocol entered into force in 2005, Samsung has increased its efforts to protect the environment.

In 2009, the company presented a green business concept and announced the goals of supporting the global trend to reduce carbon emissions. Then, by 2018, the company reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 243.1 m tons due to using energy-efficient products. This is equivalent to using 1.5 bn refrigerators for a whole year.
2009-2018:
  • 3.55 M TONS OF E-WASTE COLLECTED;
  • 220,000 TONS OF RECYCLED PLASTIC USED TO MANUFACTURE SAMSUNG PRODUCTS;
  • 54 COUNTRIES JOINED SAMSUNG END-OF-LIFE PRODUCT RECYCLING PROGRAM.
GREEN BUSINESS INITIATIVES
In June 2018, Samsung announced plans to move its facilities in the US, Europe and China to renewable energy. Also, the company decided to build 63,000 m2 of solar and geothermal power plants in Korea.

Already in October 2018, the Samsung headquarters in the United States, as well as all the company's enterprises in the country, completely switched to the use of energy from renewable sources. Later, a similar transition took place at the Samsung plant in Slovakia.

The Samsung plant complex in the Kaluga Region has a treatment facility equipped with membrane wastewater treatment (MBR) equipment. This technology based on an innovative membrane bioreactor allows to remove heavy metal particles, reuse treated water for technical needs and significantly reduce drinking water consumption. Also, gas cleaning equipment, dust and gas collection units with carbon filter elements are installed in the plastic production shops.

Treatment plants with a membrane bioreactor occupy four times less space at the site, as compared to conventional water treatment plants of the same capacity.
THE CAPACITY OF THE SAMSUNG TREATMENT FACILITIES IN THE KALUGA REGION MAKES
300 m3
OF WATER PER DAY (AND CAN BE INCREASED UP TO 600 m3)
